Some business owners struggle a lot finding the appropriate staff in the trade sector. Most of the problems they face when hiring apprentices or qualified tradesmen is the lack of professionalism, expertise or experience. For those business owners that work hard, building a good brand reputation, developing strong relationships, looking for new opportunities, and relying on trustworthy employees is crucial to ensuring the business can keep growing. However, how close is the gap between the ideal team and the real team you are dealing with?
To make sure your business will keep growing, you first need to know what type of people are part of your team. So here are some good highlights to keep an eye on:
1. Don’t stick only on technical skills. Soft skills are as important or more than technical skills. In fact, that is what HR experts do on big companies. Said by experts, attitude is a MUST! So don’t get biased by a poor experience or lack of certificates, test them on the interview. Do they show passion about it? Are they eager to learn? Do they fit with your values and the business values?
2. Establish clear rules, guidelines and boundaries that guide the behaviour of team members. In most cases they are not written down, they are simply understood because the leader has established that business culture. Make sure you take control of your team culture and explicitly tell them what is allowed and what isn't. What do you expect from them not just as workers but personally?
3.Additionally, to work cohesively with your Tradie mates, make sure you have established responsibilities for them. Adjust goals and priorities and also make sure you tell them what you expect from them. But also, importantly, listen to them as well. Do you know what they expect from you as a leader? Do you know what their main goals are?
4. Lastly, examine how the group handles agreement and conflict, and how group members relate to one another.Good relationships in the workplace can make a significant change in the performance of your team. Invite them from time to time to leisure activities and make sure alcohol is not involved! Arrange a sport match, invite them to a good NRL match.
